The defending champions, Australia and New Zealand will renew their long-standing rivalry when they meet in the opening match of the Rugby League World Cup 2026 at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Thursday, October 15. 

Australia enter the tournament after winning the 2025 Rugby League Ashes series against England. Coach Kevin Walters has named a strong squad for the opening fixture, with Reece Walsh at fullback and Cameron Munster partnering Mitchell Moses in the halves. Captain Isaah Yeo will lead the side, while Jack Bostock and Jacob Preston are in line to make their international debuts.

The Kangaroos have been among the dominant forces in the Rugby League World Cup, winning nine of the previous 10 editions.
