The United Nations Human Rights office has condemned the racist abuse directed at Coco Gauff following a controversial point during her China Open victory over Sun Xinran. The incident sparked a backlash against the American tennis star after she stopped play to raise concerns about a flickering advertising board, leading the umpire to order the point to be replayed after a video review.
Gauff won the match 7-5, 6-1 but later revealed that she had received a significant amount of racist abuse on social media. The UN Human Rights office addressed the issue on Saturday, calling on players, coaches, sports organisations and fans to stand against racism and sexism in sport.
“Racist messages such as those targeting tennis player Coco Gauff online are appalling and illustrate that Black female athletes are specifically targeted for vitriol and racial abuse,” it wrote on X.
