Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed his first-ever victory in Singapore after winning a chaotic Sprint on Saturday, with the start delayed by more than 30 minutes because of heavy rain. The race also witnessed a record nine retirements in a Formula One Sprint, making it one of the most eventful short-format races in the sport’s history.
Verstappen, who started from pole position, finished ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to secure his first win of any kind at the Singapore circuit. However, the Dutchman made it clear that his focus remained on Sunday’s Grand Prix rather than the Sprint result.
“I want to win tomorrow. I don’t see this as a win in terms of actually winning a Grand Prix,” Verstappen said.
Mercedes’ championship leader Kimi Antonelli was gifted fourth place after the two McLarens collided on the final lap while his team mate George Russell crashed out of the lead on lap one.
