Three influencers and six policemen have been targeted in recent months, with the Opposition questioning police response.
With the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections approaching, gangsterism is emerging as a major test of governance, public safety and political credibility. From extortion threats against businessmen to shootings involving local political figures and the growing circulation of illegal weapons, organised crime is increasingly shaping the debate over law and order in the state.
The scale of the challenge is reflected in Punjab Police’s ongoing Gangsteran Te Vaar campaign. On October 7, its 260th day, police conducted 563 raids at identified locations linked to gangster associates, arrested 230 people and recovered one weapon. The cumulative number of arrests under the campaign reached 76,820, according to official figures. On October 8, police conducted another 557 raids and arrested 251 people, taking the cumulative tally to 77,071.
