The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand became applicable from October 20, 2026, providing scope for Indian exporters to avail themselves of zero-tariff advantage in 100% of the tariff lines of New Zealand pertaining to Indian exports. It is estimated that the FTA will increase the competitiveness of Indian goods, promote market access and enhance trade relations between the two nations.

According to Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, the Free Trade Agreement aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concept of Viksit Bharat 2047. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, he explained the possible advantages to exporters, MSMEs, artisans, farmers and the pharma sector.

Furthermore, India and New Zealand are determined to double bilateral trade in goods and services worth ₹35,000 crore by 2030. The FTA has provided new prospects in manufacturing, agriculture, services and other export sectors.

India–New Zealand FTA: What Does the Agreement Mean for Exporters?

FTA eliminates tariffs on eligible Indian goods imported into New Zealand. This may enhance competitiveness of Indian goods in the market. Reduced tariff costs may allow the exporter to provide competitive prices and create new business opportunities.

It becomes very important for those exporters who seek to venture out of their usual export destinations. Enhanced market access may enable Indian producers to access wider customer base through diversification of markets.

However, the exporters would have to comply with rules of origin and other applicable customs laws under the agreement.

Which Indian Industries Will Benefit From the India–New Zealand FTA?

There are a number of sectors in India that will enjoy benefits as a result of the tariff-free trade. These sectors include engineering goods, textile goods, footwear, leather goods, gem and jewellery, pharmaceuticals, sporting goods, and select agricultural products.

The lack of tariffs will facilitate the competitiveness of prices and the market penetration in the New Zealand economy for the above sectors. There is a likelihood of the engineering and manufacturing industries accessing machinery and other industrial products. In addition, the gem and jewellery, footwear, and leather industries will access foreign buyers easily.
