Italian Ambassador Antonio Enrico Bartoli has described Russia’s threats amid the ongoing Ukraine war as serious, warning that the conflict poses a direct threat to European security and undermines the foundations of the international order. Bartoli also expressed support for reforming the United Nations to give emerging and established global powers, including India, a greater voice in international decision-making.

In an interview, Bartoli said Italy was closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation of the conflict, particularly amid Russian President Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats. “The threats are serious, and we are vigilant to avoid a further escalation of this conflict,” the Italian envoy said, stressing that the war has consequences extending far beyond Europe.

Describing the conflict as the result of Russian aggression, Bartoli said the war had entered its fifth winter and posed a direct challenge to the principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity. He warned that the prolonged conflict was affecting economies worldwide, including India, through rising fuel and fertiliser prices and disruptions to food exports.

The ambassador said Italy continued to support Ukraine’s right to defend itself while pursuing dialogue and diplomacy. However, he emphasised that meaningful negotiations should not come at the cost of Ukraine’s complete surrender.

Responding to questions about Moscow’s claim that NATO’s expansion had contributed to the conflict, Bartoli said the alliance was a community of free states whose membership decisions were voluntary. He recalled Italy’s earlier efforts to improve relations between NATO and Russia, including its role in the creation of the NATO-Russia Council.
