KATHMANDU: Nepali researcher Sonika Lamichhane is exploring the growing impact of misinformation, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital literacy on public perception and communication in an increasingly connected world.
Lamichhane, a PhD student in Communication, Culture and Media Studies at Drexel University in Philadelphia, United States, is investigating how information is created, shared, interpreted and evaluated across digital platforms.
Her research examines why certain narratives gain widespread attention while others remain unnoticed, as well as how people identify, understand and share information online. Using interviews, media content analysis and observations of online behaviour, she seeks to understand the factors that influence the spread of misinformation.
One of her current research interests is misinformation during Nepal’s Gen-Z protests. She is examining recurring themes and patterns in online content, identifying platforms that contribute to the circulation of misleading information and exploring how particular narratives reach wider audiences.
The research comes amid the growing influence of social media as a source of news and information, particularly during major political and social developments. By analysing online content related to the protests, Lamichhane aims to understand how misinformation travels through digital networks and how platforms influence public understanding of events.
