Prince William has spent years making his sporting loyalties clear, with football and Aston Villa occupying a special place in his life. But recently, the Prince of Wales swapped the stands for the crease, joining cricketing greats Sourav Ganguly, Brian Lara, Joe Root and Ajinkya Rahane for a game of street cricket on The Mall, outside Buckingham Palace in London. The informal session brought traffic to a standstill and gave the future King a chance to test his batting against some of the sport’s most recognisable names. The event was organised ahead of the Earthshot Prize ceremony scheduled to take place in Mumbai next month. Former India captain’s, Ganguly, verdict on William’s batting was encouraging; the prince “batted alright”.
The appearance was not a royal announcement of a new sporting allegiance. William remains one of Britain’s most prominent football fans, but the cricket session offered another glimpse of a family whose sporting interests stretch across generations and disciplines. From Queen Elizabeth II’s lifelong devotion to horse racing to Catherine’s role at Wimbledon and King Charles III’s engagements with international cricket teams, sport has repeatedly provided the royals with a way to connect with the public, athletes and causes beyond the palace gates.
Prince William Plays Cricket With Sourav Ganguly And Brian Lara
William joined the Backyard Cricket Boys’ session on The Mall, where former India captain Sourav Ganguly, West Indies great Brian Lara, England batter Joe Root and former India captain Ajinkya Rahane were among the players taking part. England stars and other cricket personalities also joined the gathering. William had a go at batting and bowling, while the relaxed setting allowed him to mingle with spectators and pose for photographs. The session promoted the upcoming Earthshot Prize awards in Mumbai, linking the sporting spectacle with William’s environmental initiative.
