Former world number one Daniil Medvedev booked his place in the Shanghai Masters semifinals on Friday after beating American Tommy Paul in three sets. He will now face Spain’s Rafael Jodar, who continued his breakthrough season by defeating Casper Ruud to become the youngest semifinalist in the tournament’s history.
Medvedev, the fifth seed, recovered from a second-set setback to win 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in two hours and eight minutes. Jodar, meanwhile, came from a set down to beat the Norwegian seventh seed 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 20 minutes.
Medvedev Recovers To Reach Shanghai Masters Semifinals
Medvedev struck 16 aces and 31 winners against 15th-seeded Paul to reach the 70th tour-level semifinal of his career. The victory also improved his head-to-head record against the American to 5-1 and strengthened his bid to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.
After losing the second set, the Russian regained control in the decider and took advantage of a dip in Paul’s level to close out the match.
