Nine Indian wrestlers were denied US visas ahead of the U23 World Wrestling Championships 2026 in Las Vegas, leaving them unable to compete at an important international tournament despite qualifying to represent the country. The affected athletes, including 2024 U17 World Champion Neha Sangwan, were reportedly refused visas over their age and employment status.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) sought intervention, but the visa dispute overshadowed India’s campaign. Meanwhile, Vishvajit More delivered a historic performance by becoming the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to reach the U23 World Championships final.

Why Were Nine Indian Wrestlers Denied US Visas?

The controversy emerged on October 7, when nine Indian wrestlers were informed that their US visa applications had been rejected following interviews at the American Embassy in New Delhi. According to the WFI, the reasons reportedly included the athletes being under 20 and not having formal employment.

The federation questioned the decision, pointing out that the U23 competition is specifically designed for athletes aged between 18 and 23. Many wrestlers at this stage of their careers are still training and competing full-time rather than holding conventional jobs.
