Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that two oil tankers caught fire after striking naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. Each vessel was reportedly carrying around two million barrels of crude oil, although their identities and the origin of their cargo remain unknown.
Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported that the first incident triggered an explosion and a major fire, while the second tanker was engulfed in flames. The IRGC alleged that both ships had switched off their navigation and radar systems and attempted to use a route that Iran had not authorised.
Iran Tightens Control Over Strait Of Hormuz
Tehran has imposed restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz since the US-Israeli war against Iran began in late February. Iranian authorities have demanded that vessels obtain permission before crossing the waterway.

The IRGC also claimed that one tanker attempted to transit with US support, while the other became immobilised. These claims have not been independently verified. Before the conflict, the Strait of Hormuz handled around one-fifth of global oil consumption, making disruptions to shipping there a major concern for energy markets.
