Four officers were scheduled to descend from the ceiling onto the field around 15 minutes before kickoff. According to a UTSA spokesperson, the rappel team belonged to Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis.

During the demonstration, one of the officers appeared to descend rapidly before losing control and striking the turf. Medical personnel immediately rushed onto the field to provide assistance. After being attended to for several minutes, the service member was placed on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital. The precise circumstances that led to the fall remained unclear, and no official details about the severity of the injuries had been released.

UTSA subsequently issued a statement expressing its sadness over the incident and offering support to the injured soldier and those close to them. “Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the soldier who was affected, his family and his military colleagues,” the university said. It also announced that well-being services were being activated for students, faculty and staff who might have been emotionally affected by what happened.
