The malfunction of a rifle, as well as information from a colleague, played an important role in helping US law enforcement agencies reveal the terrorist activities related to a mass shooting plot that was aimed at a Hindu religious institution in Illinois. A 19-year-old man, Alexandros Paporakis, who works as a Taco Bell employee in Palatine, was arrested on October 11 because of the disturbing texts and photographs of weapons sent to his colleagues.
As prosecutors say, Paporakis allegedly went to Aurora, Illinois, on October 11 with the help of an AR-type rifle, ammunition, and tactical gear. The prosecutors suggest that he wanted to attack a Hindu temple in this area and hurt people of Indian descent. However, the exact place of worship that Paporakis planned to attack is not known.
According to the prosecutor’s office, there was a malfunction in the rifle that prevented Paporakis from using it. He left the location and tried to find out how to fix the problem on the Internet. He also called his colleague to tell what had happened.

It is said that during the conversation, Paporakis told police that his gun had jammed and that he fled the scene “super fast.” He was also said to have provided electronic messages demonstrating the malfunctioning rifle, a picture of himself in tactical clothing, and an eight-page manifesto.
The co-worker, along with another worker, contacted the authorities with this information. The police departments of both Palatine and Mount Prospect responded together and were able to arrest Paporakis before he allegedly came back to conduct the attack.
This investigation led to the discovery of weapons, ammunition, tactical clothing, and information related to white supremacy and neo-Nazi ideology. Paporakis is now facing criminal charges and has been ordered by the court to stay in custody.
