Russia’s Federal Security Service has arrested a Japanese journalist on suspicion of espionage, accusing him of collecting sensitive military intelligence on behalf of the Japanese government. The detainee, identified in Moscow court records as 34-year-old Yuki Imai, was apprehended in the Far Eastern city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk before being transferred to the Russian capital.
On Tuesday, Moscow’s Lefortovsky District Court formally ordered that Imai be held in pre-trial custody under Article 276 of the Russian Criminal Code, a severe national security charge that carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in a penal colony.
What Are The Espionage Charges Against The Journalist?
The Federal Security Service released blurred video footage of the security operation, showing operatives detaining the correspondent at a hotel and forcing him to unlock his personal electronic devices. In a public statement regarding the arrest, the domestic intelligence agency claimed that the journalist was actively gathering information concerning Russian military personnel on the direct instructions of Japanese intelligence services.
