Summary

  • The Happy Song was developed in 2016 at the request of Cow & Gate, a British baby food company.  The company wanted a song that could make babies happy and give parents some relief during difficult moments.
  • Heap also wanted to make sure the song would not become irritating for parents even after they had listened to it many times.
  • The experience highlighted why Heap had wanted to create the song in the first place: to offer parents a simple way to make difficult moments a little easier.

Calming a crying baby can be a difficult task for parents. The challenge becomes even greater when a baby starts crying during a car journey.

Parents often try different tricks such as shaking keys or making funny sounds but these methods do not always work.

To help solve this problem experts developed a special song called The Happy Song. It was designed to make babies feel happy and help parents manage stressful moments.

According to a report published by CNN, the song was created 10 years ago with the help of scientific research.  It was a joint project involving two psychologists and Grammy-winning musician Imogen Heap.

The song has become extremely popular over the years. It has been played more than 470 million times on Spotify. Many parents say it has made car journeys and daily life at home easier by helping calm their crying babies.

As the song marks its 10th anniversary the research behind its creation and its worldwide success have attracted renewed attention.

How was The Happy Song created?

The Happy Song was developed in 2016 at the request of Cow & Gate, a British baby food company.  The company wanted a song that could make babies happy and give parents some relief during difficult moments.

To develop the song, music psychology expert Lauren Stewart and child development specialist Caspar Addyman worked with Imogen Heap.

At the time Heap’s daughter was around 18 months old, which also gave the musician personal experience of understanding a young child’s behaviour and interests.

The team collected information from more than 2,000 parents to discover which sounds attracted babies’ attention.

The findings showed that babies responded particularly well to sounds such as animal noises and other babies laughing.  These sounds were later included in the song to make it more interesting for young listeners.
