For the past few days, a feud between singer-songwriter Kelly Clarkson and a Brooklyn toy store has grabbed widespread attention. But what sparked the dispute? From a $15,000 singing bird to Pretty Woman comparison, here is all you need to know about the high profile feud.

Kelly Clarkson-Toy Store Feud: What Happened?

The dispute started on October 10, 2026, when Clarkson went on X, formerly Twitter, to recount what happened to her at the Art of Play toy store in Brooklyn Heights, New York City.

The singer explained that she had gone to the store because she appreciated its products and had a number of items in mind that she wished to buy. She alleged, however, that an employee made her feel as if she couldn’t afford an item she was interested in, and instead offered to help her find something similar.

Clarkson likened the encounter to a scene in the 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman, where Julia Roberts’ character is treated with disdain while shopping in an expensive clothing store. In her post, Clarkson called out the employee and implied that the store had missed out on a major sale as a result of the exchange.

The dispute revolves around a mechanical singing and dancing bird called Molly, which is on display inside Art of Play.

This bird is a specialized mechanical artwork made by Bliss Kolb, an artist based in Seattle. According to the store, Molly is fixed permanently to the wall and plays a significant part in its in-store magic performances. The business initially said that the display piece was not available for purchase.
