Alberta Referendum 2026:  Alberta citizens have rejected a motion seeking to commence a process for Alberta’s separation from Canada, according to a report by CBC News. As per the preliminary results, about 76% plus of the voters favored remaining a part of Canada, while the rest wanted the province to proceed with a move towards conducting a referendum on Alberta’s independence.

Nevertheless, the vote did not directly address the question of whether Alberta should secede from Canada to become an independent country. Rather, it was a vote on whether to start a process, which would later culminate into a second and legally binding referendum on Alberta’s separation from Canada.

Counting and declaration of results of the vote were delayed following delays in opening of several polling centers. In all, more than 100 voting centers were required to keep their voting time extended. About 1.35 million Albertans, representing about 43% of the voter population, had cast their votes in advance and special ballot.

Issues regarding energy policy, central regulations, and distribution of revenue have caused tension between the two levels of governments. But it seems that this dissatisfaction has not always translated into widespread popular support for independence.
