Charles Oliveira has backed Justin Gaethje to make his own decision about retirement, saying the UFC lightweight champion deserves a standing ovation whether he continues fighting or walks away from the sport.
Oliveira believes Gaethje is unlikely to earn more money in his next fight than he did at UFC Freedom 250, the historic event held on the White House lawn in June. The Brazilian said he understands why the American might consider retiring after building an accomplished career.
“I think that, without a doubt, he is not going to make more money in his next fight than he made at the White House,” Oliveira told MMA Fighting.

“I also understand his side of saying, ‘Man, I’ve already had great fights, I’ve built a great history, and wanting to retire.’ But it’s not me or you or someone else to say. It’s him with himself, right? It’s up to him to understand what the next step is, whether now is the time to stop and retire. To sit down and reflect.”
Oliveira added that he holds Gaethje in high regard regardless of what he decides.
