Students, faculty members and other members of the Cornell University community have staged protests over the institution’s handling of sexual assault allegations on campus. Demonstrators are demanding stronger measures from the university, including trauma-informed training for campus police and changes to how sexual violence cases are addressed.
Hundreds of protesters gathered on campus on October 5, with participants carrying signs and chanting slogans calling for accountability and justice. More events are expected to take place in the coming days.
Why are Cornell students protesting?
The protests have been driven by growing criticism of Cornell’s response to allegations involving sexual violence. Students have accused the university of failing to adequately address broader concerns surrounding sexual assault on campus.

The demonstrations intensified after a lawsuit filed on September 16 by a woman identified as Jane Doe. The lawsuit alleges that she was sexually assaulted by members of Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity in October 2024 while she was too intoxicated to consent.
The seven fraternity members named in the lawsuit denied the allegations during Cornell’s internal investigation.
