Eva Marie Saint was born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey. She grew up partly in Albany and Delmar, New York, before studying acting at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She later moved to New York, where she trained at the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg.
Saint initially built her career in radio, television and theatre before making her feature-film debut in 1954.

Saint made her film debut as Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront, opposite Marlon Brando. The performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the 1955 Oscars. She became only the fourth performer to win a supporting-actress Oscar for a film debut.
