Mercedes driver George Russell has been handed a 20-place grid penalty for the Singapore Grand Prix 2026 after the team exceeded the permitted allocation for two power unit components during qualifying.
According to the FIA decision details provided, Mercedes installed a fourth Energy Store and a fourth Control Electronics Unit on Russell’s car, exceeding the permitted limits under Article B8.2.2 of the FIA Formula 1 Regulations. Each additional component carries a 10-place grid penalty, bringing the total to 20 places for the Singapore race.
The penalty is a major setback for Russell ahead of the race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, where track position can be particularly important given the circuit’s tight layout and limited overtaking opportunities.
