Former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher has avoided bankruptcy after clearing an outstanding tax debt owed to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The 48-year-old’s case was heard at the Insolvency and Companies Court in London on Tuesday, where Judge Nicholas Briggs dismissed the bankruptcy petition filed against him.
The court’s decision came after HMRC confirmed that Carragher had paid the outstanding amount. Kevin Hassan, representing the tax authority, informed the hearing that the debt had been settled, removing the basis for the petition to proceed. With the payment confirmed, the bankruptcy proceedings against the former England international were dismissed.
