KATHMANDU: Nepal will prioritize climate justice, protection of the Himalayan region, climate adaptation and climate-related loss and damage at the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled to take place in Antalya, Turkiye, from November 9 to 20.

The government is preparing to highlight the climate risks and disaster losses faced by the country despite its negligible contribution to global climate change, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment. It also plans to seek greater international support for post-disaster relief and rehabilitation through the Loss and Damage Fund.

Ministry Secretary Rajendra Prasad Mishra said climate change was increasing risks in the Himalayan region, while recent disasters had exposed the vulnerability of mountain communities. The country will urge the international community to recognize these risks and support measures to protect the region and its people, he said.

The delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, with Minister of Forests and Environment Gita Chaudhary also attending. The government is working to ensure that the delegation includes representatives from relevant ministries and civil society.
