Israel commemorated on Wednesday the three-year anniversary of the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, with memorial activities being held across the country. At this politically important juncture, Israel is also preparing for a national election.

This marks the first anniversary of October 7 since the ceasefire that started in Gaza last year. Relatives of victims of the attack, including those who were taken hostages, are meeting to honor their loved ones.

The attack started on October 7, 2023, at 6:29 a.m., when Palestinian militants penetrated into Gaza border areas and attacked the southern parts of Israel using gunfire, rockets, and grenades. Based on the numbers provided by AFP from official sources in Israel, 1,221 people died during the attack, and 251 hostages were taken to Gaza. 44 of these hostages had already been killed.

The day will be commemorated at a number of sites that have been directly affected by the attack. A ceremony was due to be held at Kibbutz Kfar Aza at the exact moment of the attack. 64 people were killed there, whereas 18 were abducted. The other ceremony was to be held at the venue of Nova music festival where 370 people were killed and dozens taken hostage.
