UK Weather: Britain is preparing for a hard winter ahead with fears of flooding, extended drought and storms. Many areas of England are still in drought after a very hot and dry summer, and heavy autumn and winter rain could increase the risk of flooding. The government has established a Flood and Drought Resilience Taskforce to meet for the first time on October 14, 2026, to help the country better prepare for extreme weather.

UK Weather: Why Is the UK Facing Flood Risks Alongside Severe Drought?

England is experiencing contrasting weather challenges, with drought affecting water supplies and concerns growing about potential flooding. Yorkshire entered drought status on October 9, joining central, southern and eastern England, while parts of the North East and North West remain under prolonged dry-weather status. Reservoir storage was reported at approximately 54% during October 2–8, around 21 percentage points below the seasonal average. Although rainfall could help ease drought conditions, intense downpours may increase flood risks in vulnerable communities. However, widespread flooding is not inevitable, as actual conditions will depend on local rainfall, river levels and drainage capacity.
