UPI MDR Latest News:  The introduction of the proposed Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) for some transactions in the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system could be deferred from October 15, 2026, to January 1, 2027, as per reports. NPCI, which runs the UPI platform, has received requests for delay from various merchant groups, fintech companies and payment platforms. As per reports, this delay has been proposed in order to give more time to organizations to prepare themselves for the proposed change.

UPI MDR Rollout: What Is the Proposed October 15 Change?

The framework suggests an MDR of 0.4 percent on eligible UPI payments from customers to merchants who exceed the value of ₹2,000. The fee would be applied to cover the cost of processing such transactions, and the fee would be charged by merchants to the respective payment service providers or banks in accordance with the reports on the framework.

If the rate is 0.4 percent, then the fee would be ₹12 for a payment of ₹3,000 and ₹40 for a payment of ₹10,000 before any cap or exemption.
