US Midterm Elections: The US is all set to conduct highly competitive midterm elections next month. But what do they mean and why are they so important for the ruling federal government? Here’s all you need to know.

US Midterm Elections: Meaning

As the name suggests, Midterm elections take place midway through a US president’s four-year term in office. In contrast to presidential elections, where voters select the president and vice president via the Electoral College, midterm elections mainly decide who represents the public in the US Congress.

The Congress is made up of two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate. Representatives in the House serve two-year terms, which means all House seats are up for election every two years. Senators serve terms of six years, and their elections are staggered so that roughly one-third of Senate seats are contested every two years. These elections almost always happen in even numbered years, that fall between Presidential elections.
