Changing the name on an Aadhaar card is no longer a one-size-fits-all process. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has outlined separate requirements depending on whether the applicant is correcting a minor spelling issue, changing a surname after marriage or seeking a more substantial name update.

The revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), effective from September 18, 2026, requires Aadhaar holders to provide prescribed supporting documents for name corrections. UIDAI will also examine the authenticity of documents, affidavits and Gazette notifications submitted during the process.

Which Aadhaar name changes are considered minor?

Some relatively small modifications are classified as minor name changes under the revised SOP.
