Germany could be pulled into a direct and violent confrontation with Russia as Moscow increasingly views Berlin as a “main adversary”, the country’s foreign intelligence chief has warned.
Martin Jaeger, president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), told parliament’s intelligence committee on Monday that tensions with Russia had entered a “new and more dangerous” phase.

“Germany is in danger of becoming embroiled in a violent conflict with Russia,” Jaeger said, pointing to the attempted drone attack on a Ukrainian cargo plane in Leipzig in August as one example.
He described Russia as the most serious direct threat currently facing Germany.
“No other country currently poses such a direct, comprehensive and concrete threat to Germany,” Jaeger said.
He added that Germany had not sought the confrontation, but was being pushed into it by Russia, which sees Berlin as a “main adversary” because of its opposition to Moscow’s expansionist policies and war in Ukraine.
Russia-Ukraine War Latest News: One killed and six injured in Russian strike in Kharkiv
A Russian airstrike on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, killed one person and injured six others, according to the city’s mayor Ihor Terekhov.
The strike late on Sunday set an administrative building and several vehicles on fire, Terekhov said in a statement on Telegram.
At least 10 multi-storey residential buildings were also damaged, while emergency teams continued search and rescue operations.
Russia is also reported to have used Banderol missiles, part of Moscow’s growing deployment of jet-powered loitering munitions that combine features of drones and cruise missiles.
