Netflix’s Below begins as a supernatural mystery about a terrifying creature lurking beneath the icy waters of a small Newfoundland fishing town. But by the end of the six-episode series, the real horror turns out to be a combination of climate change, corporate greed and a community pushed to the brink.

The story follows Calvin Penney (Josh Hartnett), a fisherman struggling to save his family and his hometown of Snook’s Arm. As residents experience strange symptoms and people begin dying, Calvin discovers that the mysterious creature is connected to a much bigger secret involving the town’s future.

The finale finally reveals what the creature wants, why the Crocker family is determined to empty the town and how Calvin attempts to save both his community and the animal. But what exactly is the giant squid? Do its eggs survive? And what do the multiple icebergs in the final scene mean?

Here’s the ending of Below explained.

What Is The Giant Squid In Below?

The creature terrorising Snook’s Arm is a gigantic squid known as Mudder. Although the series initially presents her as a potentially supernatural threat, marine researcher Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis) discovers that her aggressive behaviour has a biological explanation.

Mudder is protecting her eggs, which are trapped inside an iceberg. As the ice melts and the surrounding waters become too warm for her offspring, she becomes increasingly desperate to defend her nest. Her secretions also contaminate the local water supply. The resulting symptoms make people intensely thirsty and draw them towards the sea, where Mudder hunts them.

The discovery changes how Calvin and the others understand the attacks. Mudder is not simply killing people for the sake of it. She is trying to protect her young in an environment that has become increasingly hostile to their survival.
