A large gathering was held at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Thursday as part of the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and actor Prakash Raj were among those who attended the demonstration.
The protesters called for Kumar to step down as Chief Election Commissioner and raised concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission and its voter-verification exercise.
Why are protesters demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation?
The campaign follows reports concerning disagreements within the Election Commission over aspects of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Indian Express had reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised objections over changes linked to Form 6 and the management of ECINET, the Election Commission’s voter-roll database.
