US death row inmate Christa Pike is now conscious and speaking after surviving a failed lethal injection execution in Tennessee, according to an update from her lawyers. Pike, 50, remains hospitalized and is continuing to receive critical medical care following the botched execution attempt on September 30. Pike’s attorneys said on Tuesday, October 6, that she was conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care. They also said she remains handcuffed and shackled to the bed despite suffering severe injuries to her arms during the failed execution. Her lawyers said her recovery is medically unprecedented and that her prognosis remains unclear. “At a minimum, we expect a long recovery,” they said.

Christa Pike Execution: What Happened During Failed Lethal Injection?

Tennessee attempted to execute Pike by lethal injection at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on September 30. She received two doses of pentobarbital, a drug intended to cause death during the execution.

However, Pike remained alive after the drugs were administered and was eventually taken to a hospital. She was initially unconscious and was placed on a ventilator. Her lawyers later said her arms had been left “swollen, burned, and blistered” following the failed procedure.
