By A Staff Reporter, Kathmandu, Oct. 6: The Health Insurance Board (HIB) has initiated a transition of the health insurance programme to a digital system, making National Identity Card mandatory starting from mid-December.

According to Dr. Subash Pyakurel, president of HIB, the National Identity Card will be mandatory for citizens aged 16 and older to enroll in the health insurance programme, renew their coverage, and access health insurance services.

“A digital system will be used to consolidate detailed information regarding how and from where service recipients are, or are not, accessing services. This will enhance the effectiveness of health insurance. The system will also make it easier to identify instances where a service recipient has misused services or has been deprived of them,” said President Dr. Pyakurel.

In a HIB meeting focused on digital reforms for the health insurance programme, the Board decided to adopt a technology-friendly system for everything from beneficiary identification to claims management and service procurement. The HIB’s new decision is also expected to streamline updating personal details, improve the overall reliability of insurance management, and scale up the service.
