Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (October 06): South Korea’s stock market returned from its extended holiday break with a striking split on Tuesday, October 6. The KOSPI started the session on a positive note after overnight gains on Wall Street but lost momentum as investors locked in profits in major technology stocks and remained cautious about elevated bond yields. At the same time, the smaller KOSDAQ attracted strong buying, particularly in cybersecurity, semiconductor equipment and other growth stocks.
The contrast showed how investors were moving money away from expensive large-cap chip names while chasing companies tied to emerging technology themes.
The KOSPI eventually finished lower, while the KOSDAQ extended its rally. Rising global yields, a weaker won, foreign selling and caution ahead of corporate earnings weighed on the mainboard. Meanwhile, recent financial-sector hacking incidents sparked a powerful rally in cybersecurity stocks on the KOSDAQ.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (October 06): Why is the Korean Stock Market Down Today?
The main reason behind the KOSPI decline was a combination of profit-taking in semiconductor stocks, foreign selling and concerns about elevated global bond yields.
The benchmark initially benefited from gains on Wall Street. The KOSPI opened at 7,044.67, up 0.58%, after the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.05% in the previous session. However, the early optimism faded as investors focused on rising Treasury yields and upcoming corporate earnings.
Technology stocks became the biggest drag. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix both declined as investors reduced exposure to chipmakers ahead of earnings updates.
Higher borrowing costs also continued to weigh on sentiment. U.S. Treasury yields were trading around multidecade highs, while the Korean won weakened against the U.S. dollar. Yonhap reported that the won was around 1,344 won per dollar by late morning.
Foreign investors also remained cautious. Earlier in the session, foreigners were already net sellers of Korean shares, adding to pressure on the KOSPI.
Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (October 06): KOSPI Falls Below 7,000
The KOSPI erased its early gains and moved decisively lower during Tuesday’s session.
The index opened at 7,044.67, up 0.58%, but fell below the psychologically important 7,000 mark as selling intensified. By late morning, it stood at 6,964.85, down 0.56%.
The final session data supplied for October 6 shows the KOSPI closing at 6,923.68, down 80.06 points or 1.14%.
The reversal was important because it showed that investors were unwilling to chase the market higher after the holiday break. Instead, they used the early strength to take profits, particularly in heavily weighted semiconductor companies.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (October 06): KOSDAQ Rises
The KOSDAQ told a very different story.
Instead of following the KOSPI lower, the tech-heavy secondary market attracted strong buying. The index opened at 902.16 and moved above 910 during the session, with semiconductor equipment and cybersecurity shares leading the advance.
The KOSDAQ’s rise was closely linked to strong demand for cybersecurity stocks after a series of financial-sector hacking incidents raised expectations for greater spending on digital security.
Genians, SANDS Lab, AhnLab, RaonSecure and other security companies recorded major gains during the session. Yonhap reported that Genians, AhnLab and RaonSecure were among the strongest movers in morning trading, with some stocks temporarily reaching their daily upper limits.
