Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (October 07): South Korea’s stock market started October 7 under pressure even as Wall Street extended its record run, showing that strong global technology sentiment was not enough to lift Seoul shares at the opening bell. Investors returned to caution as they assessed semiconductor valuations, upcoming Samsung Electronics earnings and the impact of elevated global borrowing costs.

The KOSPI opened 1.11% lower at 6,864.25, but quickly reduced its losses. By 9:15 a.m. local time, it had recovered to 6,922.59, down 18.8 points or 0.27%, according to Yonhap. The KOSDAQ also opened lower, while investors closely watched Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix for clues about the next direction of the technology-heavy market.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (October 07): Why is the Korean Stock Market Down Today?

The early weakness came despite another strong overnight performance on Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.49%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.45% to reach another record high.

Instead of following Wall Street higher, Korean shares faced pressure as investors remained cautious after the previous session’s sell-off in major semiconductor stocks. On October 6, the KOSPI fell 0.89% to 6,941.39, while SK Hynix lost 3.69% and Samsung Electronics declined 1.45%.

The market also entered the session with investors looking ahead to Samsung Electronics’ preliminary third-quarter earnings announcement scheduled for October 8. That report could become an important test for the semiconductor rally.

At the same time, global bond yields remained a concern. The October 6 sell-off followed a rise in U.S. Treasury yields to multidecade highs, increasing pressure on high-growth and technology shares.

Korea Stock Market (KRX) Today (October 07): KOSPI Opens 1.11% Lower

The KOSPI opened at 6,864.25, down 77.14 points or 1.11% from the previous close.

However, the index recovered much of the early decline. By 9:15 a.m., it was at 6,922.59, down 0.27%.

This recovery suggests that buyers stepped in after the initial sell-off rather than allowing the opening decline to deepen. Still, the benchmark remained below the psychologically important 7,000 level.

The previous session provides important context. On October 6, the KOSPI closed at 6,941.39, losing 0.89% after opening at 7,044.67. Foreign investors sold a net 1.75 trillion won of KOSPI shares that day.
