Netflix’s new Polish film Less of a Stranger takes viewers into the life of Jan Borysewicz, the guitarist and frontman of the legendary rock band Lady Pank. Directed by Kristoffer Rus, the two hour film looks at his early years, his love for music, difficult family relationships and the experiences that shaped him as an artist.
Starring Mikołaj Bukrewicz, Kinga Preis and Mirosław Tomczuk, the film is not just about the making of a rock star. It also tries to show the personal cost behind Borysewicz’s journey.
The result is a film with an interesting subject and some strong moments, but one that does not always make the most of its story.

Less Of A Stranger Review: A Story About Music, Rebellion And Family
At the centre of Less of a Stranger is Borysewicz’s passion for music. Growing up in communist Poland, he develops a strong interest in Western rock music and gradually begins to push against the world around him. His love for music becomes more than a hobby. It becomes his way of finding freedom.
The film also spends a lot of time on his family life especially his relationship with his father and the support he receives from his mother. These personal experiences play an important role in shaping the man he eventually becomes.
This gives the film an emotional foundation but the family drama sometimes feels more important than the music itself.
Less Of A Stranger Review: Mikołaj Bukrewicz Brings Energy To The Role
Mikołaj Bukrewicz carries much of the film as the young Borysewicz. He manages to capture the character’s rebellious side without making him feel like a conventional rock star from the beginning. There is an awkwardness and restlessness to his performance that works well for a young musician trying to find his place. The supporting cast also adds weight to the family portions of the story, particularly Kinga Preis.
