Genius does not usually come dressed in academic robes, but in Buenos Aires, football and education have come together in a fitting tribute to Lionel Messi. As the Argentina captain prepares for one final international appearance on home soil, the University of Buenos Aires has given him one of its highest honours. The boy from Rosario who spent his career rewriting the rules of football is now officially a doctor.

UBA Rector Ricardo Gelpi said the honour was about much more than Messi’s remarkable numbers and trophies. The university highlighted his perseverance, humility and influence as a global ambassador for Argentine national identity.
