What happens when a childhood toy collection becomes the inspiration for a full-fledged action movie? Matchbox: The Movie takes the little cars that many grew up playing with and turns them into the starting point for a dangerous international mission. Starring John Cena, Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson and Teyonah Parris, the Apple TV film brings together action, comedy, friendship and a race against time to save the world.
Directed by Sam Hargrave, known for his work on the Extraction films, the movie promises fast cars, big stunts and plenty of chaos. But while the idea has the potential to deliver a fun action adventure, the film struggles to make its story as exciting as its premise suggests.
What Is Matchbox: The Movie About?
The story follows Sean (John Cena), an undercover CIA agent who returns to his hometown after being away for a long time. Sean was once the leader of a group of childhood friends and his return brings the old gang back together. But their reunion takes an unexpected turn when they become caught up in a dangerous international conspiracy.

An ordinary reunion soon turns into a mission involving secret agents, powerful enemies and a nuclear threat. Sean and his friends must work together to clear their names and prevent a disaster, even though they are far from being a conventional team of spies.
The group includes Aimee (Jessica Biel), Crosby (Sam Richardson), Charmaine (Teyonah Parris) and Ted (Arturo Castro). Their shared history gives the story a personal side, while the dangerous mission provides the excuse for high-speed chases, fights and explosive action.
Inspired by Mattel’s Matchbox toy cars, the film attempts to turn a familiar childhood brand into a live-action adventure.
