Major League Baseball has proposed a return to a 154-game regular season, along with major changes to the postseason, as negotiations with the MLB Players Association continue. The MLB 154-game season proposal would take effect in 2029, while a new system allowing higher seeds to select playoff opponents could begin as early as 2027.
The league’s latest proposal would also expand the Division Series from best-of-five to best-of-seven, creating a longer October schedule while giving teams more recovery time between games. The changes are part of a broader collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the players’ union.
MLB 154-game season proposal explained
Under the proposal, MLB would reduce the regular season from its current 162 games to 154 beginning in 2029. The schedule would include a regular Monday off-day for most teams, but one or two nationally televised games could be played on Mondays. Teams playing on those Mondays would receive Thursday off instead.
