Being busy has become an integral part of who we are. Someone asks how things have been, and the answer which comes to mind is not “I need a break,” or “I’ve been having a rough time,” or even “I’m trying to slow down a bit”; but “I’ve been busy.” A packed schedule shows that you are working hard and getting things done. Rest appears the complete opposite and something you need to feel guilty about.
And this is exactly what happens when productivity turns into a self-worth metric.
The pressure is especially felt by the younger generation that are students or working but still figure out life. There is always a “now what” after each achievement. Always another course to take, another skill to acquire, another job to land with better salary, another project to complete. And social media adds to this pressure. We witness people our age or even younger achieve our dream life, dream body, exercising and yet managing their academics while working, getting promoted, travelling to yet another destination.
