A troubling sight has emerged from Kingsmead in Durban, where the World Test Championship holders South Africa are playing Australia in front of largely empty stands during the opening Test of the series. The lack of spectators has drawn attention on social media, with cricket fans questioning the turnout for a match between two of the world’s leading Test sides.
On the field, South Africa have made good use of the conditions after Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors reached 99/4 in 34.1 overs during the second session on Day 1, with Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder taking two wickets apiece to put the hosts in control.
