Aaron Sorkin returns to the world of Facebook with The Social Reckoning, a new drama inspired by the real events surrounding whistleblower Frances Haugen and Wall Street Journal journalist Jeff Horwitz. The film looks at how Haugen decided to expose what she had seen inside Facebook and how the documents she shared became the basis of the “Facebook Files.”

Mikey Madison plays Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White stars as Horwitz and Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg.

Unlike The Social Network, which told the story of Facebook’s beginnings, The Social Reckoning focuses on what happened after the platform had already become a major force in people’s lives. It looks at concerns around misinformation, extreme content, Facebook’s recommendation system and the impact of Instagram on young users.

What Is The Social Reckoning About?

At the centre of the film is Frances Haugen, a Facebook employee who becomes increasingly uncomfortable with what she discovers while working at the company. She eventually decides to share internal documents with Horwitz, setting off a chain of investigations that would expose several of Facebook’s internal concerns to the public.

The film turns that real life story into a tense drama about one employee deciding whether to speak up against one of the world’s most powerful companies.

The story also follows Horwitz as he works to understand and report the information Haugen has given him. Their relationship becomes an important part of the film, with the journalist trying to verify the material while Haugen weighs the consequences of revealing what she knows.
