Aaron Sorkin returns to the world of Facebook with The Social Reckoning, a companion piece to his Oscar winning 2010 film The Social Network. This time, the story moves away from the creation of Facebook and focuses on whistleblower Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White, as they uncover the company’s controversial practices. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg in the film, which Sorkin has both written and directed.
With The Social Network setting a very high bar, early reactions to The Social Reckoning have naturally focused on whether Sorkin has managed to create a film that can stand on its own. The first reviews are mixed but Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong have emerged as some of the most praised elements of the film.
The Social Reckoning Review: What Are Critics Saying?
Scott Menzel was among the most enthusiastic critics, calling the film “a true return to form for Aaron Sorkin” and praising Madison and White as “fantastic.” He also liked Strong’s performance as Zuckerberg, although he admitted that comparisons with Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal from The Social Network are difficult to avoid. Menzel ultimately felt the film works best when treated as a companion piece rather than simply a sequel.
