The US military has suffered losses involving at least 81 aircraft, drones and helicopters during its ongoing military operations against Iran, according to an updated Congressional Research Service (CRS) report.

The report, updated on October 5, records losses and damage involving both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft since the launch of Operation Epic Fury on February 28. The assessment draws on military statements, media reports and findings from the Department of Defense inspector general.

The CRS has cautioned that the figure could change as combat continues and more information becomes available. Some aircraft classified as damaged have also subsequently returned to service.

How much could replacing the equipment cost?

The Congressional Budget Office estimated in September that replacing equipment lost through August 1 could cost between $1.9 billion and $3.3 billion.

The upper estimate depends on the Pentagon’s approach to replacing the equipment. The $3.3 billion figure should therefore not be interpreted as the value of the 81 aircraft alone, as it covers broader equipment losses.

F-15s, F-35 among aircraft affected

The CRS report includes several major US combat aircraft. The list contains 12 F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets, one F-35A Lightning II and two A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft.
