US Power Grid Emergency Today: The US government has ordered additional measures to protect electricity supplies across parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest as unusually warm autumn weather, scheduled power plant maintenance, and transmission outages put pressure on the regional grid.

The emergency order, issued by Energy Secretary Chris Wright on October 12, gives PJM Interconnection temporary authority to dispatch designated power plants and use backup generators when necessary from October 13 to 16, 2026.

The order aims to prevent a shortage from escalating into a wider power emergency.

However, it does not announce rolling blackouts or confirm that electricity cuts will take place. PJM has issued a Maximum Generation Alert and Load Management Alert for October 13, warning of tight operating conditions but saying customers do not need to take action.

US Power Grid Emergency Today: Why Did the US Declare a Power Grid Emergency?

The Department of Energy issued the emergency order after PJM warned that electricity demand and planned maintenance could leave the region with limited generation capacity and fewer options to transfer power between areas.

According to the order, PJM anticipated demand of approximately 111,500 megawatts or higher on October 13. At the same time, numerous generating units remained unavailable because of planned maintenance and other outages, while scheduled transmission line work could restrict electricity transfers.

PJM submitted its request for emergency relief on October 11. The Department of Energy issued the order the following day under Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act. It remains effective through October 16.

The department said the action would make additional electricity generation available when required. Chris Wright said, “This order will help ensure millions of American families and businesses across the mid-Atlantic have access to affordable, reliable, and secure electricity by making additional power generation, including backup power, available to use as needed.”

He added, “While past leaders’ energy subtraction policies have made the grid more vulnerable to the risk of blackouts when the sun doesn’t shine, or the wind doesn’t blow, this administration remains committed to using every available tool to prevent blackouts.”
