NEW DELHI

The Opposition’s protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls turned uneasy on Wednesday as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other INDIA bloc MPs were detained by the Delhi Police while attempting to proceed towards Jantar Mantar.

The detention came a day after Opposition parties staged a protest march and dharna at Akashvani Bhawan over the SIR exercise. On Wednesday, INDIA bloc MPs first attended a meeting convened by Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss the issue and their demands from the Election Commission before proceeding towards Jantar Mantar.

Heavy security was deployed in the area as the MPs attempted to cross police barricades. Rahul Gandhi was seen trying to open a barricaded gate but was stopped by police personnel. Several Opposition MPs were subsequently detained and taken away from the protest site. Gandhi was taken to Barakhamba police station.

In a strong message after his detention, Rahul Gandhi said the Congress and INDIA bloc would continue their agitation despite arrests and legal cases, framing the protest as a fight to protect the Constitution and democracy.
