British Airways Flight BA295 Live Update: A routine transatlantic journey from London to Chicago turned into an unexpected return to Heathrow on Monday after British Airways flight BA295 made a dramatic descent over Ireland and declared a general emergency. The Boeing 777 had climbed to cruising altitude after leaving Heathrow but suddenly dropped thousands of feet, prompting the crew to turn the aircraft around and head back to London.

After spending hours in the air, the aircraft landed safely at Heathrow, with British Airways later confirming that a technical issue had forced return.

Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft descending rapidly from around 37,000 feet to approximately 9,000 feet while it was flying over Ireland. The aircraft also transmitted the internationally recognised 7700 transponder code, which alerts air traffic controllers that a plane is experiencing a general emergency.

The aircraft then abandoned its transatlantic journey and turned back towards London.
