Humla, Oct. 5: Locals of Humla have called for a review of the areas currently designated as restricted by the government in the mountainous district, saying the designation of tourist destinations as restricted areas has hindered the development and promotion of tourism.

Local representatives, political parties, civil society members and tourism entrepreneurs have called for the areas to be opened.

Chief District Officer Bholanath Guragain said residents had recommended reviewing the existing restricted areas after the Department of Immigration sought their views on whether the current provisions should be reviewed.

The Department had recently issued a circular seeking suggestions from Humla residents on reviewing the existing restricted areas.

The department said the Hilsa border point in Humla might need to be recognised as a bilateral trade point and called for suggestions taking into account infrastructure development in trekking areas, access to transportation, changes in trekking routes, the need to protect biodiversity and socio-cultural heritage, national security and the need to facilitate tourism activities through easier movement.
