BY A STAFF REPORTER, Kathmandu, Aug.1: A Nepali team, including athletes who won medals at international karate competitions held in two different Japanese cities, returned home on Tuesday.
The team comprising medalists from the 20th Asian Games (held in Nagoya, Japan, from September 20 to 23) and the 11th Shito-Ryu Karate-Do International Championship (held in Yokohama from September 25 to 27)
landed at Tribhuvan International Airport at 10:51 PM on Tuesday.
A total of eight athletes from Nepal: three men and five women competed in both events; the same athletes who participated in the Asian Games also competed in the Yokohama tournament.
In the Asian Games karate competition, only Nepal's Tenzing Sherpa won a medal. He secured a bronze medal in the men's over-84 kg category. Tenzing's medal marked Nepal's first medal at the 20th Asian Games. Tenzing, who clinched the bronze by defeating an athlete from Laos 9–1 in the match for third place is the fifth athlete to win a medal for Nepal in karate at the Asian Games.
