Nandigram Bypoll 2026 Live Update: With Nandigram preparing to vote in a closely watched Assembly bypoll, the Election Commission made a last-minute change to the local police leadership. Just a day before polling, the commission replaced Ajay Kumar Mishra as the inspector-in-charge of Nandigram police station and appointed Debashis Sarkar to the post.

The move comes after opposition parties raised objections to Mishra’s posting and alleged that he was close to the ruling party. The commission ordered the change on Monday, October 5, while voters in Nandigram and Rejinagar are set to cast their ballots on Tuesday. The decision has added another layer of political tension to an already closely watched election.

The commission did not publicly specify a reason for the transfer in the order, according to reports. However, the move followed complaints from opposition parties alleging that Mishra had links with the ruling party.

The timing of the decision has attracted attention because polling is scheduled for Tuesday. The commission has asked the state authorities to implement the change immediately and submit a compliance report.

Sarkar said he had only just learned about his appointment when he was contacted about the change. He was already in Nandigram on Monday to oversee traffic arrangements ahead of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s visit to the constituency.

“I was in Nandigram to oversee traffic arrangements as Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to come here to cast his vote tomorrow. That is when I learnt about it.”

He also said he had not yet received the formal order at the time of speaking to PTI.
